At the same time that Polygon Pictures announced the movie version and the second season of their critically acclaimed and well received anime, Knights of Sidonia, they also announced that they will be making the animated version of an earlier work from Knight’s of Sidonia’s mangaka, Blame! The Ancient Terminal City (Blame!).

Blame! is based on Tsutomu Nihei‘s sci-fi action manga and will be featured as an anime within an anime. The anime will air within Knights of Sidonia: Battle for Planet Nine, the second season of Knights of Sidonia.

Blame! is set in a massive internet world where the ideal society is maintained by a governing body controling access to a super structure in-built system called the BIOS. However, when a catastrophe occurs and people lose access to the system and safeguards are destroyed, the world becomes a dangerous place as the system seeks to eliminate those who are trying to access it illegally. Protagonist Killy roams thousands of floors in the super structure as he seeks to enable re-access to the governing body. Killy is in search of an internet terminal gene that existed before the infection.

Blame! has seen an animated adaptation before in 2005 when a six epsisode net animation was produced. However, this time, Polygon Pictures will use state-of-the-art digital techniques to realise Nihei’s vision. A short preview of Blame! is scheduled to be included in the eighth episode of Knights of Sidonia: Battle for Planet Nine. An English subtitled trailer for Blame! was also released but details of how the anime will develop from there are not clear yet.
