Say football or soccer, and the image of Steven Gerrard’s glorious long range passes, Lionel Messi mystifying twisting and turning to beat defenders, or Cristiano Ronaldo’s trademark free-kicks come to mind. But maybe after this year’s World Cup in Brazil, from 12 Jun 2014 to 13 Jul 2014, Pikachu will become yet another name synonymous with the world’s most popular sport.
Adidas, who supply the kits/uniforms for the Japan National Soccer Team, have announced a partnership with Nintendo, where the Pokémon franchise has become the official mascot for the Japanese team. The lovable electric rodent Pikachu would be joined by 10 of his fellow Pokémon, Meowth, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Chespin, Fennekin, Froakie, Pancham, Helioptile, and Litleo, decked out in the official jersey of Japan’s National team, throwing their support as Japan chase for their first World Cup trophy in Brazil.
Pikachu rubs shoulders with Fuleco, the official mascot of the World Cup in 2014.
Although it is unlikely that we’ll see Pikachu walk out onto the pitch with the Blue Samurai, featuring the likes of Keisuke Honda, Maya Yoshida, Atsuto Uchida, and Shinji Kagawa, the deal will still see Pikachu decked out in the Japanese National kit.
The partnership is part of Adidas’ “Engine Project”, which encourages players in uniform to act as a single “engine” and foster unity.
If you want to familiarise yourself with the latest generation of Pokemon, Nintendo is having a special giveaway. When you register a Nintendo 2DS, 3DS or 3DSXL gaming console with a qualifying game on Club Nintendo, you would be able to download Pokémon X or Pokémon Y for free. This limited time offer ends on 31 Mar 2014.
The 60 second CM for the new kit is in the video below:
