Hailing from Sapporo in Hokkaido, Eir Aoi will once again be making her way to sunny Singapore for AFA 2014. Discovered on the internet by the music composer, Fumio Yasuda, in 2011, the two have since been working together to produce numerous anisongs for hit anime series Fate/Zero, Mobile Suit Gundam AGE, Sword Art Online and the more recent Kill la kill.

Who is Eir Aoi?

She began her music career with a bang, singing the first ending theme for the popular Fate/Zero; her debut single, MEMORIA, reached no. 8 on the weekly Oricon charts. Her singles have continually ranked in the top 10 on the charts, and her most recent single, IGNITE, for Sword Art Online II peaked at no. 9. Last week, the release date of her newest single has just been announced for 12 Nov 2014; Tsunagaru Omoi (Connected Thoughts) will be the theme song for TBS’s ranking show, Rank Oukoku.

Her songs are resplendent with upbeat tunes, a perfect complement for her strong vocals. That is as far as a comment on music will go for the musically-untrained me, who feels more comfortable commenting on the lyrics of her songs. The lyrics of her songs have tended toward memories and reminiscences of the past, sometimes using them as a focus to its message on resilience and resolve for the present and future. The overall positive and optimistic energy in her songs exemplifies the very spirit of the shounen genre they play alongside with.

Why should I go see Eir Aoi live?

Eir Aoi returns to the I LOVE ANISONG concert stage this December at AFA2014 in Singapore. Loyal convention-goers and fans would remember her debut visit here last year, with her performance at the annual concert. Even for the uninitiated and the casual anime fan, Eir Aoi is not an unfamiliar name and it would certainly be an experience to watch her in concert. As mentioned, she has sung theme songs for popular shows and there will definitely be familiar tunes for everyone at the concert. Also, for the more musically inclined and trained ear, the wide range of her vocals would certainly make for a powerful performance not to be missed.

As we wait for December to come round, let us enjoy the various covers of her songs on YouTube that just go to show her popularity.

This teddy bear brings up the pitch in IGNITE by a notch, but is nonetheless adorable.

Classical covers seem to be more popular on YouTube, with popular cover artistes and channels such as TAMusic and Ishter-kun covering her songs.
