The Simpsons gave up on smart humour seasons ago, choosing instead to adopt the usage of popular cultural references (and not doing a real good job at it to be honest).
However, in its latest episode, The Simpsons dropped its usual dry wit to pay a touching tribute to the great Hayao Miyazaki who announced his retirement last year. The episode explores the budding relationship between Springfield’s resident Comic book vendor, Comic Book Guy, and an otaku from Japan, Kumiko Nakamura, showing that perhaps there is someone for everyone out there. The tributes to his work with Studio Ghibli comes when Homer and Kumiko’s father pass out after a night out drinking, creating a wonderful blend of Miyazaki’s works with popular characters from the series.
Hayao Miyazaki is not the only reference to Japanese culture in this episode, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s PONPONPON is also featured in the episode.
