In a brand new collaboration with Namco Bandai Games, Space Dandy will be mashed up with Galaga!
What better way to promote Space Dandy‘s new anime series (debuting January 2014) than to have a small game made about the show?
For those who are wondering, Space Dandy is an upcoming anime about Dandy, an alien hunter who goes around with his assistant QT and alien cat Meow being an alien hunter.
Here, watch the promo video!
Marketing gimmicks aside, this does seem interesting.
Traditionally, in Galaga, you’d just have a few lives, some aliens up top, 4 conical blocks, and your space craft. All you had to do was shoot down those aliens and hide behind the cones(till they’re gone). Simple.
But this new smartphone game seems different. While the traditional aspects of Galaga remain, you start to see the enemies do stuff seen only in later shooter games (Touhou anyone?) such as moving in formation and such. And keeping up with new gameplay mechanics, your ship can now be upgraded with points earned from destroying the enemies! Players will get to pilot the same ship seen in the anime of course, I believe its name is the Aloha Oe.
There’s more. From the game promo video, it’s spotted that there will be boss fights, player versus player (yep, you did not read that wrong), and quests that send you to capture rare aliens, pretty much like what you would find in the anime!
Here are some of the features we were talking about.

Enemies and spaceship from the anime!
This appears to be normal gameplay.

Quest!

Ship customization.: Improve your spaceship with points earned.

Boss fight! Boss battles. You can see that the bosses seem to also be adversaries in the show.

Player versus Player.
The game will be Free to Play, and will follow a microtransaction model for some in-game items. The game will debut next year on the Apple Store for the iOS and Google Play Store for the Android.
