The series is a new take on Toei Robot Girls, and the stars of this series are Z-chan, Gre-chan, and Grenda-san. Together they would defend Photon Power Town from the villains are led by Baron Ashura, the underground emperor. One can only imagine the mayhem that might ensue from this. The main voice cast we know so far are Mariko Honda (Z-chan), Inori Minase (Gre-chan), Kazusa Aranami (Grenda-san) and Aya Hisakawa (Baron Ashura). The group Kikai Shojo Tai performs the theme song, written by Robot Girls Kenkyūsho Ongaku-bu and arranged by ARM (IOSYS).
The series will see returning characters such as Gacky (Ga-Keen), Bara-tan (Baratack), Gai-chan (Gaiking), and Dandan (Danguard Ace) from the earlier Toei Robot Girls project.
Given the lineup and setting of this upcoming incarnation of the Robot Girls Project, it would make for an interesting watch for those who are familiar with the various shows where the girls are referenced from. As for those who are unfamiliar or only vaguely familiar, perhaps some snooping around and stuff like that is in order. Or you can simply watch the new version as it is and hope for the best! Here’s hoping that they’ll be able to pull in newer audiences and not just those who are already familiar, which is a given since you just personified various mechas from various series into cute girls. What’s there not to like (your mileage may vary)?
Here are some of the characters not in any particular order:
Z-chan, Mazinger Z reference
Gre-chan, Great Mazinger reference
Grenda-san, UFO Robo Grendizer reference
Gecchan, Getter Robo reference
Baron Ashura
Garada-chan, Garada K7 reference
Minerva X
Gaia Q5
The series will premiere on the 4th of January 2014, on the CS broadcast satellite system’s Toei Channel.
